Early Years

My Mom was born on May 19, 1924, in the ancient Scottish town of Dunfermline. She was the only child of two dedicated medical professionals whose demanding careers kept them constantly occupied tending to the needs of others. Although they were able to provide their daughter with a comfortable and secure upbringing materially, the nature of their work left little opportunity for the warmth, affection, and emotional closeness that children so deeply need during their formative years.

As a result, much of her early childhood was shaped by solitude and independence. While she never lacked for necessities, there was often an absence of the simple nurturing moments that help build strong emotional bonds within a family. The expectations placed upon children of that era, combined with her parents' professional obligations, meant that love was more often expressed through duty and provision than through open displays of affection. Those early experiences quietly influenced the person she would become - resilient, self-reliant, and deeply compassionate toward others, yet at times carrying the unspoken loneliness of a child who longed for more time and closeness with her parents.

She attended St. Serf's Academy, an exclusive private school for girls in Edinburgh, where discipline, etiquette, and academic achievement were held in the highest regard. Although she excelled in her studies, the loneliness she carried from childhood remained a constant companion. Rather than withdrawing into herself, however, she sought ways to fill that emotional void through activity, challenge, and companionship.

Determined to make the most of every opportunity available to her, she immersed herself in a wide range of pursuits. She took up horse riding and dressage, finding both freedom and comfort in the bond between rider and horse. She joined field hockey and tennis teams, embracing the camaraderie and healthy competition that sports provided. If something sparked her curiosity, she eagerly gave it a try, whether out of a desire to learn, to belong, or simply to keep herself occupied.

These activities helped shape her into a remarkably capable and well-rounded young woman. Beneath her polished exterior and busy schedule was a quiet determination to create for herself the sense of connection and fulfillment that had been missing during her early years.
