I must admit that I know very little about exactly how my mother and father first met. The details survive only in fragments and family recollections, although one particular story was repeated often enough over the years that it has remained firmly embedded in family memory.
They apparently met during a visit to a museum in Edinburgh while standing before a portrait of Maria Clementina Sobieska, granddaughter of the famed Polish king John III Sobieski. My father, who at the time was already a well-known Polish actor, is said to have struck up a conversation about the fascinating historical ties between Poland and Scotland. The portrait itself provided the perfect opening. Princess Maria Clementina, who later became the wife of the exiled Jacobite claimant James Francis Edward Stuart, occupied a unique place in both Polish and Scottish historical tradition. Through her connection to the Jacobite cause, she had long been remembered with a certain romantic affection in Scottish history.
One can easily imagine my father enthusiastically sharing these historical connections, perhaps captivated not only by the subject of the painting but also by the lovely young woman standing beside him listening with interest. From my father's own recollections, the moment he first laid eyes on my mother he was completely smitten. There was something about her warmth, beauty, and spirited personality that immediately captured his heart. He later admitted that his very first thought was simple and direct: "I'm going to marry her."
At the same time, he understood that winning her heart might not be entirely straightforward. He was considerably older than she was, and he recognized that the age difference could present certain challenges. Yet whatever reservations he may have had were clearly outweighed by the strength of his feelings. For my mother, who had endured years of loneliness and restriction before finally discovering freedom and companionship through military service, meeting someone who appreciated both her intelligence and her vibrant spirit must have felt like the beginning of an entirely new chapter in her life.
